The FERROVIA 4.0 project aims to address the technological and market challenges that the global railway sector has faced, stimulating a collective action that mobilizes around a wide range of companies and entities of the R&I system that are part of the Cluster of the Portuguese Railway Platform (PFP)  in carrying out  innovative  activities  of industrial  research  that  enhance  experimental  development,  and  the  demonstration of new solutions capable of promoting better operational capacity, sustainability and competitiveness to railway systems.

The   global  objective of the project is  to develop  different  components,  tools  and systems  to  be  tested  on  rolling stock  and  real  infrastructure,  which  are oriented  towards  the  economic  and  ecological  sustainability  of the  railway system  to  lower the operating and maintenance costs; for reliable information systems to support decision-making in asset management and for the creation of security systems capable of monitoring the infrastructure and triggering alerts and measures of protection/intervention. It is also the project’s ambition to ensure that cybersecurity technologies and methodologies are incorporated into the information and communication technology structure of the railway system, in order to avoid unwanted intrusions.
